10-year-old In Survival Mode from Birth Gets Wish - Marvel to Help Draw Comic Characters
Luke Robinson has been in survival mode from birth. He was five days old when he had open-heart surgery, giving him a 20% chance of survival. Perhaps he became a super hero himself when he beat the odds. However, when he was 3, his parents started noticing his complexion pailing. "We thought it might be because of his heart, maybe it wasn't functioning properly," Luke's mom, Jan Robinson said. A trip to the doctor confirmed he had leukemia. After an eight months stay for treatment at St. Jude's, Luke came home and underwent daily chemo treatments for three years. He had more surgeries and was not expected to walk again. It was a major achievement when learned to use a walker so he could attend kindergarten.
Luke coped with his years of treatment by creating comic heroes. "I was thinking about it a lot," Luke said. "I wanted to help kids understand they shouldn't be
scared of doctors, they should be scared of their sickness." Luke created Dr. Shrek, the super hero doctor who fights Evil Virus and other threatening villains. Luke's brother, Josh, who gets upset about going to the doctor, became Super Shot, Dr. Shrek's sidekick.
About 6 months ago, a Make-A-Wish Foundation volunteer visited Luke to let him know he qualified for a wish.
Luke's Wish: To Create a Superhero Comic
Luke wants to create an invincible doctor and also be a character in the comic.
He wants the comic to be something that helps kids when they are scared at the doctor/dentist office.
To unveil his wish, the Make-A-Wish team organized a surprise interview on WSMV's More at Midday. Luke spoke about the characters he created - Dr. Shrink, Super Shot, and the Evil Virus - all direct reflections of his life - and then learned his wish was not only coming true -- it was coming true in a big way! Luke will travel to New York to Marvel headquarters to work with an artist to create his own comic book.
The total cost of Luke's wish will be approximately $5,000. You donation can help fund Luke's wish and future wishes.
